The Coimbra Historic Centre Sound Archive (ASCHC) is a project that was born in 2013, shortly after Jazz ao Centro Clube found a home at Salão Brazil. Led by soundscape artist Luís Antero, the ASCHC is based on the principle that soundscapes are important for understanding how sound characterises a space or place. Questions such as “What sounds does our city incorporate? How many of them have already irretrievably disappeared? What can we learn about the specificity of a city’s communities (spatial communities, neighbourhoods, professional communities, etc.) through the sound dimension?” have been at the heart of the Archive’s work. Since 2016, the ASCHC has been available to the public for artistic, educational and recreational exploration.
In this residency, musicians João Hasselberg, Rui Maia and Pedro Melo Alves explore the Sound Archive of Coimbra’s Historic Centre to create a show based on the sounds of the city.
