Velho Homem is a recently formed project by Afonso Dorido (Homem em Catarse, indignu) and Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem), the result of an artistic residency at Sala Estúdio Perpétuo (Porto) during the pandemic. Through 10 field recordings, each serving as a motto for a new composition, they set our daily lives to music, forcing us to slow down and actively listen to the sounds around us.
Under the names Velho Homem (Old Man), Old Jerusalem and Homem em Catarse (Man in Catharsis), they set out to rescue some of the simple and fundamental things that so often go unnoticed. Using sound recordings of everyday moments from a diverse group of people, the duo set out to establish a musical collaboration between everyday life itself and the creators involved. In a certain tradition of “meaningful listening” and based on a set of field recordings that document life and its daily “acoustic flow”, the duo created musical pieces informed by these aural environments.
