Octávio Sérgio’s work, for Portuguese guitar with Coimbra roots, is one of the most important in the development of a guitar genre based on the Paredes and commonly known as Coimbra guitar.
Born in Viseu, Octávio Sérgio came to Coimbra to study physics, motivated by the sounds of the guitars he heard on the radio and on records. He had the privilege of meeting Carlos Paredes and rehearsing with his father Artur Paredes. From these sources, Octávio Sérgio built an innovative work, increasing the effects of Paredes and the range of the guitar, where the technical and sonic exploitation transports us to existential states full of energy and depth.
We suggest you listen to it, just as we did at the 1st Coimbra Guitar Festival, which Paulo Soares created and directed as part of the Coimbra National Capital of Culture 2003, in a show that was extremely successful and well received. This time, a few more works will be premiered and, this time, we’ll be joined by the octogenarian Octávio Sérgio.
