Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar, known as Guinga, is considered to be the greatest and most important Brazilian composer today. He is a clear watershed in Brazilian music, inventing new possibilities for guitar chords. Guinga made school. A whole generation of great musicians drank from his work.
Guinga is from Rio de Janeiro, in the northern neighbourhood of Madureira, where he was born in 1950. He was a classical guitar student of Jodacil Damasceno for five years. He began composing at the age of 16. He worked professionally as a guitarist, accompanying artists such as Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alaíde Costa, Cartola and João Nogueira. Many of his songs have been recorded by musicians such as Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Sérgio Mendes, Leila Pinheiro, Chico Buarque, Clara Nunes, Ivan Lins and many others. His compositions are in partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro, Aldir Blanc, Chico Buarque, Nei Lopes, Sérgio Natureza, Nelson Motta, Simone Guimarães, Thiago Amud, among others.
