What do an accordion, a saxophone, a double bass and two turntables have to do with the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven? In Playing with Beethoven, these are the instruments chosen to recreate his work, played by four contemporary musicians: Carlos Bica, Daniel Erdmann, DJ Illvibe and João Barradas. Regardless of the musical genres they inhabit, they all start from a common denominator: the irreverence and daring that led Beethoven to revolutionise not only compositional rules but also the social norms of the time.
In the reinterpretation of this free spirit of classical music, TAGV is hosting the show created for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, which could not be presented to the public due to the pandemic, and now Carlos Bica, a composer who combines jazz, classical music and Portuguese popular tradition, converges with the free and elegant jazz musicality of Daniel Erdmann, as well as with the colourful wealth of the craziest sound fragments captured by DJ Illvibe (Vincent von Schlippenbach), to the sound of the accordion of João Barradas, a renowned Portuguese musician with a fascinating musicality capable of embracing the most different musical languages.
