Griot 3000 is a new intercontinental project by six artists in multicultural non-jazz improvisation, in an unprecedented formation to expand the range of soundscapes.
Brazilian Spoken Word artist Rodrigo Brandão has selected instrumentalists who have had little or no contact with each other prior to the meeting proposed by the wordsmith, in a sextet that proposes to fuse songs that range from the most solid rhythmic foundation to the most abstract areas. Reaffirming jazz and its African heritage, in a dialogue between legacy and innovation, this project pays homage to the griots, chroniclers of the history of the African continent.
The lyrical depth, the spiritual relationships between the urban imaginary and ancestry, define Brandão’s particular universe, who has recorded albums and accumulated partnerships with big names on the world stage: from Tony Allen to the master Pharoah Sanders.
The group is made up of Luís Vicente on trumpet, Braima Galissá on kora, Thiago Costa on guitar, Carla Santana on electronics and Dudu Kouate on percussions.
Luís Vicente is a fellow member of free jazz podium names such as William Parker, Hamid Drake and Tony Malaby, and together with Carla Santana – an electronic alchemist descended from the minimalism of Terry Rilley – and Guinean kora master Braima Galissá, they make up the Lisbon-based nucleus.
Two cross-border members complete this line-up: Senegalese percussionist Dudu Kouaté, a teacher of African ritualisms and known for his work with the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago and Moor Mother; and Thiago Leiros Costa, a Brazilian neuroscientist and guitarist based in Italy, leader of the Onça Combo project and partner of Juçara Marçal, who mixes indigenous and Latin traditions.
In a journey inspired by Don Cherry’s legendary Organic Music Society, Griot 3000 aims to co-ordinately jump the fence between West Africa, North-East Brazil and Southern Europe, without defining or limiting the sonic possibilities.
