The Djangoland Quintet recreates the ‘Jazz Manouche’ of 1930s Paris, whose greatest exponent was guitarist Django Reinhardt, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
The repertoire ranges from American jazz classics to French cançonetism, passing through the sounds of Eastern Europe, with some more contemporary deviations. Part of the collective imagination as a musical scene during the period between the two World Wars in Europe, Jazz Manouche, or Gypsy Jazz, gained expression at the hands of Django and the ensembles he led.
Djangoland pays homage to these precursors with a project that excels in the rigour and creativity that jazz allows. It presents music that is both festive and uncomplicated, familiar and yet still little known in Portugal.
