Johannes Brahms’ “A GERMAN REQUIEM” promises an evening of intense musical drama. Famous for its perfect symbiosis between choir and orchestra, the work was written reflecting on death and suffering through texts from the Luther Bible, a German translation of the Bible produced by Martin Luther to bring the texts of the Old and New Testaments to the people in church, school and homes, and which was considered the world’s first best seller. From a careful selection of these texts, Brahms composes a work that is more dramatic than religious, which addresses universal themes such as life, death, suffering and the value of spiritual consolation. Requiem will be performed by soprano Leonor Barbosa de Melo, bass-baritone Rui Silva, the Inês de Castro Symphonic Choir and the Inês de Castro Orchestra, conducted by Artur Pinho Maria.
In the first part of the concert, Italian pianist Antonio Di Cristofano will perform Ludwig van BEETHOVEN’s iconic ‘Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73’, known as the ‘Emperor’s Concerto’. Composed between 1809 and 1811, it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf and was Beethoven’s last piano concerto. The Inês de Castro Orchestra, conducted by Rómulo Assis, will accompany the performance of the work that is considered a symbol of Beethoven’s musical romanticism.
Dedicated to the ‘Voices that Illuminate’, the Closing Concert of the XII Requiem Cycle – Coimbra 2024, in a ‘Tribute to the Voices for Human Rights’ is a moving and timely appeal for peace.
