The InstruMensal Festival is an initiative organised by the Coimbra Music Museum Cultural Association, which brings one instrumental music concert a month to Coimbra’s concert halls. In October we invited the artist José Valente.
Irreverence. This is perhaps the characteristic that runs through José Valente’s work and the four albums that preceded ‘Quem é o José Valente’, released just this October.
After an award-winning solo album and two albums for ensembles (one for a philharmonic band, the other for a sextet of violas) that were highly appreciated by critics and the most diverse audiences, José Valente returns once again to his more intimate format, to his apparently more personal record. ‘Apparently’ because all his music comes together through his desire and virtuoso ability to inaugurate paradigms for his instrument: the viola d’arco.
This time, however, the novelty is extremely homely. An album recorded in his home, in his laboratory, surrounded by the sounds of his favourite musicians: Frank Zappa, José Mário Branco, Beethoven, Fela Kuti, Carlos Paredes and Shostakovich. He is joined by various colleagues, players of peculiar instruments, makers of other sounds that are equally attractive when combined with José Valente’s unique improvised language.
Is ‘Who is José Valente’ a new album? Is it autobiographical? Is it a dedication to his loved ones?
