From the tropical mountains that inspired Gabriel García Marquez’s magical realism, one of Colombia’s most intense and unique voices has emerged. Montañera builds ethereal, hypnotic and immersive melodies with a synthesiser. The sparse percussion creates an atmosphere of inescapable depth from which her voice stands out.
‘A Flor de Piel’, Montañera’s new album, is a meditative journey of self-discovery that began after she moved to London. Her ambient pop draws inspiration from communities of Colombian women of African descent, who used music to preserve their heritage and promote peace, as well as bullerengue, a traditional style of music and dance from the Caribbean coast.
María Mónica Gutiérrez has released nine albums and performed at the Smithsonian Museum, the Kennedy Centre, KEXP and SXSX in the United States. Her music has caught the attention of publications such as Rolling Stone, The Guardian and Pitchfork.
